Description
Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, marking the beginning of the Tamil month Thai and the Uttarayan period. The word Pongal means overflowing, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. The festival gives thanks to the Sun God, nature, and cattle for a bountiful harvest.
Significance
Pongal celebrates the harvest season and expresses gratitude to the Sun, rain, and farm cattle. It is the Tamil equivalent of Makar Sankranti and is one of the most important festivals of Tamil culture.

पोंगल तमिलनाडु का चार दिवसीय फसल उत्सव है। पोंगल का अर्थ है उफनना, जो समृद्धि और प्रचुरता का प्रतीक है।
Significance
पोंगल फसल कटाई का उत्सव है और सूर्य, वर्षा और पशुओं के प्रति कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करता है। यह तमिल संस्कृति का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण त्योहार है।

पोङ्गल् तमिलनाडुप्रदेशस्य चतुर्दिवसीयः सस्यकर्तनोत्सवः अस्ति। पोङ्गल् इत्यस्य अर्थः उत्फुल्लनम्, समृद्धेः प्रतीकः।

पोङ्गल् सस्यकर्तनस्य उत्सवः सूर्यस्य वर्षायाः पशूनां च कृते कृतज्ञतां प्रकटयति।

பொங்கல் தமிழ்நாட்டின் நான்கு நாள் அறுவடை திருவிழா. பொங்கல் என்றால் பொங்கி வழிதல் — செழிப்பு மற்றும் வளத்தின் குறியீடு. சூரிய தேவன், இயற்கை, கால்நடைகளுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தும் திருவிழா.
Significance
பொங்கல் அறுவடை காலத்தை கொண்டாடுகிறது. சூரியன், மழை, பண்ணை கால்நடைகளுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவிக்கிறது. தமிழ் கலாச்சாரத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான திருவிழா.
