Description
Badami Cave Temples are a complex of four Hindu and Jain rock-cut cave temples located in Badami, Karnataka. They are among the earliest examples of Chalukyan architecture and feature exquisite carvings.
History
Carved during the 6th century CE under the patronage of the Chalukya dynasty, particularly during the reign of Pulakeshin I and Mangalesha. Badami was the capital of the Early Chalukya dynasty.
Architecture
Four main caves: Cave 1 is dedicated to Shiva, Cave 2 to Vishnu, Cave 3 (largest and most ornate) to Vishnu, and Cave 4 to Jain Tirthankaras. Intricate relief sculptures and ornate pillars.
Legends & Stories
Badami, originally called Vatapi, was named after the demon Vatapi who was killed by Sage Agastya. The Chalukyas chose this dramatic sandstone cliff setting as their capital.

Nearest airport is Hubli (100 km). Nearest railway station is Badami (5 km). Buses from Bangalore (500 km) and Hubli.
