Description
Ellora Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising 34 rock-cut caves in Maharashtra. Unique for representing three religions — Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain — the caves demonstrate the spirit of religious harmony in ancient India.
History
Carved between the 6th and 11th centuries CE. Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, is the largest monolithic rock excavation in the world, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Architecture
The 34 caves include 12 Buddhist (1-12), 17 Hindu (13-29), and 5 Jain (30-34) caves. The Kailasa Temple was carved from a single rock from top to bottom, removing an estimated 200,000 tons of rock.
Legends & Stories
The Kailasa Temple is believed to represent Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. Legend says the architect prayed to complete it in a week, and carved from top to bottom.
