Description
Mahalaxmi Temple in Kolhapur is one of the most important Shakti Peethas and one of the six places where worship of Shakti is considered most sacred. Dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi (Ambabai), it is one of the three and a half Shakti Peethas.
History
The temple was originally built in the 7th century by the Chalukya dynasty. It was later renovated by the Shilahara rulers and the Yadava dynasty. The idol is believed to be self-manifested.
Architecture
Built in Hemadpanthi style with intricate black stone carvings. The four-armed Mahalaxmi idol is carved from a precious gemstone and wears a distinctive Kolhapuri crown adorned with a Shivalinga on top.
Legends & Stories
The idol of Mahalaxmi is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested). It is said that Goddess Lakshmi chose this spot as her permanent abode. The unique feature is the Shivalinga on the goddess's crown.

Kolhapur has its own airport with flights from Mumbai. Kolhapur railway station is 2 km. Well connected by road from Mumbai (375 km) and Pune (235 km).

हेमाडपंथी शैली। काले पत्थर की जटिल नक्काशी। चतुर्भुजी महालक्ष्मी मूर्ति पर शिवलिंग युक्त मुकुट।
