Description
Renuka Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, located on a hilltop in Mahur, Nanded district, Maharashtra. Renuka is the mother of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu. This is one of the 3.5 Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra.
History
The temple has ancient origins associated with the legend of Parashurama and his mother Renuka. It has been a major pilgrimage centre in the Marathwada region for centuries.
Architecture
A hilltop temple with traditional Maharashtrian architecture. Stone steps lead up to the main shrine with views of the surrounding landscape.
Festivals & Celebrations
Navratri is the principal festival. Chaitra Navratri is especially significant as it coincides with the local temple fair.
Legends & Stories
The hair of Goddess Sati fell here according to some traditions. Renuka Devi is revered as the mother of Parashurama who was beheaded by her own son on his father Jamadagni's order, and later revived.
