Description
Katyayani Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, located in Vrindavan, the sacred land of Lord Krishna. The goddess Katyayani is a fierce form of Durga worshipped by the Gopis for Krishna as their husband.
History
The temple is of ancient origin, associated with the Katyayani Vrat that the Gopis performed to win Lord Krishna. It combines Shakti and Krishna worship traditions.
Architecture
A traditional temple in Vrindavan with the deity housed in a simple sanctum amid the many Krishna temples of the sacred town.
Festivals & Celebrations
Navratri, Kartik month, and Janmashtami are major festivals. The Katyayani Vrat during Margashirsha month is especially significant.
Legends & Stories
The hair (chikut) of Goddess Sati fell at this location in the Braj region. The Gopis of Vrindavan worshipped Katyayani to obtain Lord Krishna as their husband. The Bhairava is Bhairava.
