Description
Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple is one of the most ancient Devi temples in Kerala, considered a Shakti Peetha. Located in Kodungallur (ancient Muziris), it is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali/Bhagavathy, a fierce form of the Divine Mother.
History
Kodungallur was the ancient port city of Muziris and a major trade centre. The temple has been a centre of Shakti worship in Kerala for over a millennium. It is associated with the Chera dynasty.
Architecture
Traditional Kerala temple architecture with copper-roofed shrines, a large compound wall, and a sacred pond (kulam). The temple has a distinctive round sanctum.
Festivals & Celebrations
The Bharani festival is the most famous, known for its unique rituals. Navratri and Meena Bharani are also significant.
Legends & Stories
The divine energy (Shakti) of Goddess Sati is said to have manifested here. The goddess appeared as Bhadrakali to protect the region. The Bhairava is Mahakaal.

Nearest airport is Kochi (30 km). Nearest railway station is Irinjalakuda (12 km) or Angamaly (20 km). Regular buses from Kochi and Thrissur.
