Description
Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple at Srisailam is the second of the twelve Jyotirlingas and also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas. Located on the banks of the Krishna river in the Nallamala Hills, it is one of the few temples that is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha.
History
The temple dates back to the 2nd century CE. It was patronized by many dynasties including the Satavahanas, Pallavas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Reddy Kings.
Architecture
The temple is built in a blend of Chalukyan and Dravidian styles. The outer walls feature elaborate carvings depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The temple complex is surrounded by thick forests of the Nallamala Hills.
Legends & Stories
According to legend, when Shiva's sons Ganesha and Kartikeya competed over who would marry first, Kartikeya, upset at losing, retreated to the Krauncha mountain. Shiva and Parvati came here as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba to be close to their son.

History
मंदिर का इतिहास दूसरी शताब्दी ईसवी तक जाता है। सातवाहन, पल्लव, चालुक्य, काकतीय और विजयनगर साम्राज्य इसके संरक्षक रहे।

चालुक्य और द्रविड़ शैली का मिश्रण। बाहरी दीवारों पर महाभारत और रामायण के दृश्य।

कथानुसार कार्तिकेय विवाह की प्रतियोगिता हारकर क्रौंच पर्वत पर चले गए। शिव-पार्वती पुत्र के निकट रहने यहाँ आए।
