Description
Kedarnath Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Garhwal Himalayan range at an altitude of 3,583 meters near the Mandakini river. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
History
The temple is believed to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century adjacent to an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The temple survived the devastating 2013 Kedarnath floods due to a large boulder that diverted the debris flow.
Architecture
Built of large, evenly cut grey stone slabs, the temple is a fine example of ancient mountain architecture. The walls are thick and sturdy to withstand extreme weather. The conical shikhara rises majestically against the Himalayan backdrop.
Legends & Stories
According to the Mahabharata, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. Shiva, avoiding them, transformed into a bull. When Bhima caught him, the bull dove into the ground, leaving behind the hump at Kedarnath.

Nearest airport is Jolly Grant Dehradun (239 km). Nearest railway station is Rishikesh. Trek of 22 km from Gaurikund. Helicopter service available from Phata/Guptkashi.

History

Architecture
बड़े भूरे पत्थर के स्लैब से निर्मित, यह प्राचीन पर्वतीय वास्तुकला का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।

महाभारत के अनुसार, कुरुक्षेत्र युद्ध के बाद पांडवों ने भगवान शिव की खोज की। शिव ने बैल का रूप धारण किया।
