Description
Maa Mundeshwari Temple is considered one of the oldest functional Hindu temples in India, located in Kaimur district, Bihar. Dedicated to Goddess Mundeshwari (Shakti) and Lord Shiva, it dates back to 108 CE.
History
Inscriptions date the temple to 108 CE, making it one of the oldest continuously functioning temples. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the site. Stone inscriptions reference the Gupta period.
Architecture
The octagonal temple is built of stone on a hilltop (Paunra Hill). It features Hindu sculptures including Shiva, Ganesha, Surya, and Vishnu. The octagonal plan is rare in Indian temple architecture.
