Description
Tarapith Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, located in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Dedicated to Goddess Tara, a fierce form of the Divine Mother, it is one of the most sacred Tantric pilgrimage sites in India.
History
The temple has ancient tantric origins. It is closely associated with the famous saint Bamakhepa, a tantric devotee of Tara who lived here in the 19th century and is buried in the temple grounds.
Architecture
The temple has a traditional Bengali terracotta style. The main idol of Goddess Tara shows her nursing infant Shiva, a unique iconographic form. The cremation ground adjacent is an important site for tantric practice.
Legends & Stories
According to legend, the third eye (Tara — the pupil of the eye) of Goddess Sati fell here. Sage Vasishtha performed intense tantric penance here to attain the blessings of Goddess Tara.

Nearest railway station is Tarapith Road/Rampurhat (7 km). Nearest airport is Kolkata (260 km). Regular buses from Kolkata and Shantiniketan.

सती की तीसरी आँख (तारा) यहाँ गिरी। वशिष्ठ ऋषि ने तांत्रिक साधना की।

தாராபீத் கோயில் 51 சக்தி பீடங்களில் ஒன்றாகும். மேற்கு வங்கத்தின் பீர்பூமில் அமைந்துள்ளது. தாரா தேவிக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட தாந்திரீக யாத்திரைத் தலம்.
History
பண்டைய தாந்திரீக தோற்றம். 19ம் நூற்றாண்டின் துறவி பாமாகேபாவுடன் தொடர்புடையது.
Architecture
வங்காள டெர்ரகோட்டா பாணி. தாரா தேவி குழந்தை சிவனுக்கு பால் ஊட்டும் வடிவம் — தனித்துவமான சிலை.
Legends & Stories
சதியின் மூன்றாவது கண் இங்கு விழுந்தது. வசிஷ்ட ரிஷி தாந்திரீக தவம் செய்தார்.
