Description
Brihadeeswarar Temple (Big Temple) in Thanjavur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest architectural achievements of the Chola dynasty. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture.
History
Built by Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 CE. It is one of the Great Living Chola Temples. The temple was the tallest structure in India at the time of construction.
Architecture
The vimana (tower) rises to 66 meters, one of the tallest in the world. The capstone weighing 80 tons was placed at the top without modern machinery. The Nandi statue at the entrance is carved from a single rock.
Legends & Stories
Raja Raja Chola I built this temple to demonstrate Chola architectural supremacy and devotion to Lord Shiva. The shadow of the vimana is said to never fall on the ground.
How to Reach
Nearest airport is Tiruchirappalli (55 km). Thanjavur has its own railway station. Well connected by road from Chennai and Madurai.

राजराज चोल प्रथम द्वारा 1010 ईसवी में निर्मित। निर्माण के समय भारत की सबसे ऊँची संरचना।

विमान (टॉवर) 66 मीटर ऊँचा है। शीर्ष पर 80 टन का शिलाखंड बिना आधुनिक मशीनरी के रखा गया।

விமானம் 66 மீட்டர் உயரமானது. 80 டன் எடையுள்ள உச்சிக்கல் நவீன இயந்திரங்கள் இல்லாமல் வைக்கப்பட்டது.
