Description
Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its stunning Nagara-style temple architecture and erotic sculptures. The temples were built by the Chandela dynasty between 950-1050 CE.
History
Built by the Chandela Rajput dynasty, originally 85 temples were constructed, of which 25 survive today. Rediscovered by British surveyor T.S. Burt in 1838. The temples represent the pinnacle of medieval Indian art.
Architecture
The temples exhibit Nagara style with high curvilinear towers (shikharas). Exteriors are covered with intricate sculptures depicting celestial beings, daily life, animals, and the famous erotic panels that represent a fraction of the total sculptural work.
Legends & Stories
According to legend, Hemvati, a Brahmin maiden, was seduced by the Moon God. Their son Chandravarman founded the Chandela dynasty and built these temples to express the full range of human experience.
How to Reach
Khajuraho has its own airport with flights from Delhi, Varanasi, and Mumbai. Nearest railway station is Khajuraho (6 km). Bus services from Jhansi (175 km).

कथानुसार हेमवती नामक ब्राह्मण कन्या को चंद्रदेव ने मोहित किया। उनके पुत्र चंद्रवर्मन ने चंदेल वंश की स्थापना की।
